Attendance, fan support suprising

Bulldog gym at Marlboro County High School is usually loud, according to Bulldog fans.
I’m not sure if it has ever been as loud as it was Friday night for the Class 3A lower state championship game between Wilson’s girls and Darlington.
It was a game of one-upsmanship by the fans of both teams. Falcon fans have been reticent at home games most of the season, but on this night, they found their voices.
For every Wilson cheer, Darlington’s fans screamed even louder. For every Darlington cheer, Wilson’s faithful got louder.
They both enjoyed a moment of cheap comedy when the Wilson cheerleaders faltered on a move and three of them hit the floor. It wasn’t really funny, but I still laughed.
Not what I expected when I was told the game would be played in Bennettsville instead of Francis Marion. To me, it made no sense that two teams separated by 15 minutes had to travel 45 minutes to earn an hour’s drive to Columbia.
It’s not the first time I’ve been wrong – and it won’t be the last.
The energy the capacity crowd emitted from both sides was endless. Every person in the gym would be exhausted by game’s end, every breath spent
It didn’t hurt both teams made spectacular plays that made this sportswriter say things like, “Wow” and “What was that?” These are things I don’t usually do during games, but this wasn’t a normal game, either.
After all, these were two teams playing for a chance to play for a state title. Would you have expected anything less?

Way to go Darlington! I’ll be pulling for you to win State. On March 7, 1970, St. John’s girls won the State, so maybe March 7 is a good date. Just thought I’d throw a little trivia in here.

I also thought it was kinda weird that both teams had to travel so far to play each other. Why couldn’t they use the West Florence gym?

Good luck, Darlington!
