Almost history
Someone asked Hemingway coach Barry McFadden if he would compare Hemingway beating Calhoun County as big an upset as the N.Y. Giants beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl."There is no comparison," he replied. "They're grown men getting paid millions of dollars. They should win the game. These are just high school kids playing for pride and a championship."
Even so, the Tigers almost pulled off a monumental upset of their own.
Two-time defending champion Calhoun County entered Saturday's game with 77 straight wins, most of which came by double digits.
But the Tigers made them sweat it out until the very end. Hemingway overcame a 12-point deficit and had not one, but three chances to finish off the Saints at the end.
Tough way to end the season, but the Tigers have nothing to be ashamed of.
A lot of people will feel the refs hosed the Tigers, and maybe they did a little (traveling is apparently no longer in the rule books). But at the same time, they missed five of six free throws down the stretch. Handle things on your end and then see where you are.
And speaking of questionable calls, Lee Central watched their sixth state title fade away at the free throw line. It's not unheard of for one team to foul more than the other.
But 22 free throw shots by Keenan in the fourth quarter alone? Most teams don't shoot that many in prac-tice.
The Stallions can't point too many fingers, though. They had their second bad offensive game in a row and let the Raiders get too much of a lead. Missed layups always hurt, especially when you're sending the other team to the foul line every possession.
And congrats to C.E. Murray. The War Eagles took home another trophy and sent Schwanna Dunmore out as a champion. Dunmore has been overshadowed by Latta's Rubylee Wright, but she emerged this year as an all-around talent. A near quadruple double in the state championship? Are you kidding me?

Kids at Hemingway have nothing to hang there heads about. They played a great game. Closer than I thought it would be. Calhoun C. is the best high school team in SC regardless of classification.
