Ah, the joys of home ownership

Being a first time homeowner, a lot of things kind of creep up on you...
There's of course the maintenance, the taxes, the insurance, etc... but what about the unexpected?
Well, the other day I experienced the unexpected...big time.

I heard a loud bang while sitting in the living room. The noise came from the bathroom, and from the sound of it, I knew it wasn't good.
When I walked into the bathroom I saw that about 1/4 of the wall (comprised of tiles) was now lying in the bathtub. The tiles were all broken up, the soap dish was in two pieces and hardened grout was everywhere.
I kind of just sat there and stared at it for a few minutes. I wasn't angry, I wasn't upset, I was just in shock. I cocked my head to the side and thought "Hmm...how am I going to fix this?"
Well the short term answer involved a broom and several trash bags...the long term answer is that I have to come up with a couple thousand bucks.
The odds of that happening anytime soon...slim to none.

I thought maybe, just maybe, it would be covered by homeowner's insurance. It was worth a try, right?
Well the insurance company said it was poor worksmanship...not covered.
I then felt the urge to have a long "conversation" with the person who did the work in the first place...but alas, I didn't know who that was.
So I moved on from the problem to the solution. I cleaned up each broken tile, one by one, threw them away and swept up all of the debris. I got plastic and put it up over the exposed section of the wall. It's a very temporary solution.

Here's the positives though...I didn't like my bathroom in the first place. I hated the color and thought it was ugly and outdated. Now I have an excuse to redo the bathroom! I had been wanting to do it for some time, now I really don't have a choice. Another positive...some of the work of removing the old tile is already done! Less work for me...

It's kind of funny how life throws you curveballs. I don't really know yet how or when I'm going to be able to fix this portion of the bathroom. The shower's still fine, the bathtub's okay...I just don't think I'll be inviting over any company...anytime soon... smile

Sorry to hear about your run of bad luck Patricia..that just terrible..

I’m curious tho..how big a chunk fell out..and how high up the wall was it?

I’m asking because I had this happen to me in a house I rented one time..long before we bought our home of today..It was at just the right height and a good size for a mirror to fill the hole..I just had to square it up before installing the mirror..then frame around the mirror for that added touch..

I’m betting you aint gonna be that lucky..wink

Just a thought… Do it yourself… one of the best learning experiences I have ever had was to rebuild a guest house on my mom’s property in Rhode Island. We did it all… We ripped out the dry wall, the plumbing, the old electrical. and we rebuild all of it ourselves. There is something really rewarding about learning how to wire your own walls, tile you own floor, and hang sheet rock. All of it is hard, dirty work but fun at the same time. I never thought I would learn how to tile a floor and reset a toilet all, ever let alone in the same week… give it a shot you may surprise yourself:)

Hey Melissa…I think the “Valentine’s gift” thing is probably out of the question….after all, doesn’t it take money to buy Valentine’s gifts??

Wolf, unfortunately the tile that fell out is literally right above the bathtub..in the area that houses the bathtub…so unless I want to get some really weird looks from visitors to my home, the mirror is not a possibility. smile

Rebecca, yeah I think I am going to have to do it myself. I’m actually kind of looking forward to it…it gives me a sense of accomplishment to do something myself…we’ll see how it goes!

No you definitely dont want that..mine wasnt over the tub..

I keep getting these ads in the mail for a one day remodeling company…place called Bath Fitters…it is a one piece wall system…completely changes the entire look of your bathtub..

http://www.bathfitter.com/remodel_baths.html

I’m not sure at the expense involved..but it would increase the value of your home..They also have those surrounds at Lowe’s that would be an easy install too..

I’ll help you Patricia. Be warned. My carpentry experience is limited to assembling Lincoln logs.
But, I’m willing to learn just to spend some quality time with girl. Give me a jingle.

Happy Valentines from your lil’ mookie wookie.

Haha…thanks for the offer of help Mr. Mookie, I’m afraid it will take a little more than prior knowledge of Lincoln Log assembly though…

Happy Valentine’s to you and everyone else out there!

OH. MY. GOD.  Did anyone watch the six o’clock on Saturday night?  I know Patricia did, and well….I know melisa did!  Oh. my. god.  WE HAD THE ALL-STAR CAST!

We had the ever gorgeous Melissa Hoeman.  Then we had a light-hearted, yet serious Patricia “Gotta Re-Do the Bathroom” Burkett and…yes….he was on there…Mr. Rust-E-Ray!  I’m so excited.  You don’t understand.  I would say that Melissa, you should have ran the marathon because you’re so good at running through my mind all day, but that would be too corny, I know.  But still, IT WAS A PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT NEWSCAST!  Perfection.  Perfection is the answer to everything.  See?  If the tiling on Patricia’s bathroom was done perfectly, she wouldn’t be knee deep in caulk and cement.  Since Chris Still is perfect at running, Melissa didn’t have to go out there and participate, thus having her on the PERFECTEST SHOW!  And Rusty…oh rusty…a live report from the balmily sunny datona!  GREAT!  SIMPLY GREAT.  And you know what’s even better?!  DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S EVEN BETTER?!  It gets to happen again tonight!  BACK. TO. BACK. PERFECTION.

Good golly.  I know Wolf will say something on this, but still, The Blonde Broadcast was incredible again…and then Rusty throws a little color in there with his dark hair and bushy eyebrows.

PERFECTION!

ps….WPDE is horrible.  Their weekend crew looks like it just got done from nine rounds with Juback.  We all know he’s a figther.  I’d imagine Juback fights dirty.  Sand in the eyes.  Then get em with the hook shot.  I think Rusty boxes like one of those old englishmen with the “Put your dooks up scallywag!“  And that sports guy on the weekends doesn’t box…he slaps.

I’ve said too much.

But we all know Juback’s a fighter…we just know it.

PSS- I’m sorry I’ve been gone so long, it’s been tough with tests and stuff reacently.  I think Rusty should report from the field on the weekends.  BEACAUSE HE TARE IT UP IN DATONA!  He should be racing those cars, with the full body suit on and the helment….and right before he slams on the gas he looks over to the crowd…winks…and goes “News13…Street Coverage You Can Count On.“  And then zooms off and wins the race and at the end Melissa Hoeman is there giving the forecast of what the humidity is going to be at the finish line.  And Patricia can be the serious announcer in the booth going “HE DID IT!  RUSTY DID IT!“ and everyone will sit back and realize “Wow…this moment is Perfect.“  With a capital P…for Perfect.

WOW…....just wow!  Phlorentine, you’re insane.  I have to admit I was ROLLING at the part about the boxing.  I will admit Saturday’s show was pretty good…especially the part about the cormorants….hahhahahha.

Again, this is not Brian Formica.

Posted by  on  02/17  at  01:18 PM

I’m not insane, I’m just a die-hard fan/critic of the weekend show!  You’re included in that too!  It’s a team effort to get an award winning show off!  It’s just that Patricia and Melissa are the base of the newscast, and the reporters enhance and already stellor show!

Posted by  on  02/17  at  07:17 PM

Phlorentine..I dont know what you think I’m gonna say..

I couldnt add anything that you aint already covered..

Patricia is seriously light-hearted..Melissa is just absolutely gorgeous..and that Rusty Ray fella is babe magnet…and the weekend show is so good that we wish it could be the weekend all week long..

It’s nice to see that someone appreciates these things..

I couldnt agree with you more..wink

Phlorentine, we’re all glad to see that you’re back!
I hope your tests went well!
Thanks for the nice comments once again.

Wolf, thanks to you too….

I hope you guys don’t think I’m too serious though…ask anyone…I’m a jokester…extremely sarcastic…maybe a bit too much.

Anyway, I hope you guys continue to watch…and I hope we continue to do justice to your comments.
Take care!

Contrary to popular belief…I AM NOT Phlorentine! We do both share the same views of the blondes on the weekend show, however. Anyway, Rusty you’re my boy, but you’re no Trish or Mel!

Posted by  on  02/17  at  09:11 PM

I dont think that you are too serious..

While you are off-air..I’ve always seen you laughing and joking..at the very least..smiling..

..unless they clear the back door code at Florence..then you tend to get a bit serious..

..but even then..you are still cute just the same..wink

Dear Blogging Community,
I’ve now requested to have my own blog, and the powers that be have shot my request down.  We will re-assess this situation in a month.  However, until then, I would like to start a full wave of people requesting that I have a blog.  If there are enough requests, I’m sure a photographer/reporter will be able to finally join the “Buzz” that is WBTW.  As I am now campaigning for a blog, I will be visiting various blogs, giving written speeches to what I will accomplish in the blogging community.  I promise the following:

Intriguing subjects that will carry conversations from the Grandstrand…to the Pee Dee, all the way to Lumberton….AND BEYOND.

I will give a behind the scenes look to the stories that Patricia and I do everyday.  A perspective only seen by those in the Florence Newsroom.

I will respond to each and ever blogger’s comments with true opinion, and further the global discussions we will have.

And finally, if I receive a blog, I promise a free, and just United Sites of AmeriBlog.

VOTE FOR ME!

I turned them down tho..so look for me to pop up just about anywhere..at any time..

I’ll still vote for you tho..but only because you are NOT Brian Formica..wink
