A White Christmas in Eastern Carolina? Thursday Update
If you read this blog earlier this week, you know that statistically there is a 3% chance of a white Christmas in the Pee Dee and the Grand Strand. This is an average of every 33 years or so. Since our last white Christmas was in 1989, that means we aren't due for another Christmas snow storm until 2022. Guess that's why the song says "Dreaming of a White Christmas" huh?Well, now Christmas is well within our forecasting abilities, so let's go ahead and take at the Christmas Day forecast and see if Mother Nature has any wintry surprises up her sleeve.
Of course, we need two things for a white Christmas--actually three things if you count a miracle as one of those!
The first is cold air. You may be thinking based on our weather the last few days that the prospects are not good, but you would be WRONG! It looks like we will have a nice blast of arctic air early next week and another one late on Christmas Eve to give us a very chilly Christmas Day. Right now, I think morning lows will be somewhere in the ballpark of freezing with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s. That certainly doesn't hurt the odds of us getting a wintry surprise this Christmas.
The other ingredient is moisture. Timing is everything in the Carolinas when it comes to wintry weather and it looks like the timing will not be right for the moisture to be here at the precise time the coldest air is which is what has to happen for us to get snow in South Carolina. It looks like a cold front may slide through the area Christmas Eve to give us a few rain showers, then a fairly strong blast of chilly, but dry air for Christmas Day.
All that said, here's my official forecast for Christmas Day as of this posting: Sunny skies, High 55, Low 36.
Be sure to check back here each day as I'm sure there will have to be some "tweaking" done since Christmas is still a full week away, but it does look like it will at least feel like December on Christmas Day this year and not April. That's a step in the right direction, right?
