A soggy Myrtle Beach Marathon?

Tuesday update:

Unfortunately, the outlook for Saturday's weather for the Myrtle Beach marathon hasn't really changed from yesterday. I still think it will be overcast and cool with gun time temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. However, it still looks like it will be on the breezy side, and it still looks like there is a decent chance for rain. On the bright side, it still doesn't look like a total washout with only about .10 to .25" of rain expected. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the latest.

For the 5K event Friday night, I think the weather will be much more favorable. The rain will likely hold off until later in the evening Friday night with 6PM temperatures in the middle 50s.

Yesterday's post:

One of the biggest events the Grand Strand hosts each year is now just 5 days away--the Myrtle Beach Marathon.

Thousands of runners from all around the country and even the world have been training their hearts out getting ready for this weekend's race, but there's one thing beyond anyone's control that can negate much of that hard work if it isn't just right--the weather.

Being an avid runner myself and according to friends of mine who are marathon runners, ideal weather conditions for long runs consists of cool conditions, cloudy, but dry skies, and light winds. Right now, it looks like we may only get 1 out of those 3 conditions. It looks like the temperature at the 6:30 AM guntime Saturday will be in the mid to upper 40s which most people I talk to say is perfect. This would put temperatures around 50 degrees at 9 AM and middle 50s by noon.

That's the good news.

Now the bad. Computer models are currently showing that a storm system will develop late this week and move across the Carolinas Friday night and Saturday. Right now, it doesn't look like a tremendous amount of rain (40% or so) but there is a good chance there will be rain in the area Friday night and Saturday.

Now the really bad news. Those same computer models are indicating winds will be from the southwest around 15 mph Saturday. That would be good news if this were a straight line run from Myrtle Beach to North Myrtle Beach. However, since this a somewhat circular course, runners will certainly have to endure a strong headwind at some point in the race. Of course, for all the optimist out there, that also means you'll have a nice tail wind to push you along for other parts of the race!

Are you running in the race this weekend? If so, tell us where you're from and why you like the MB marathon!
