My husband and I went to the beach last weekend. On our way home, we stopped at a restaurant called Max and Erma’s, located at 1004 Glenforest Road. You can see it from Kings Highway, between the Tanger Outlets and Conway. We’d never eaten there before and didn’t really know what type of restaurant it was, so we decided to give it a try. It had a family-friendly atmosphere, but the presentation of the dishes reminded me of more upscale restaurants.
The waitress asked us if we had ever been to the restaurant before. We told her we hadn’t, and she suggested we try a sample of their chicken tortilla soup before we ordered.
It wasn’t something I would normally eat, but I decided to try it. It was really good. It was a little bit spicy, but not too hot. (If you decide to try it, keep in mind I don’t flavor my food with anything spicier than black pepper. The soup would probably seem mild to most people.) The soup was topped with cheddar, Monterey Jack and tortilla strips.
My husband ordered the tomato mozzarella chicken sandwich, which has roasted tomatoes, fresh basil and a tomato-basil spread on toasted ciabatta bread. It was served with a baby greens salad. The bread tasted like it was freshly baked and the different components of the sandwich went together nicely.
I ordered a hamburger with caramelized onions. The menu said the hamburgers listed were 10 ounces, but if you wanted a smaller portion, a 6-ounce size was available. I ordered the 6-ounce hamburger, and I still had to take half of it home. It was one of the best restaurant hamburgers I’ve tried. The hamburger, like the ciabatta bread, tasted like it was freshly baked.
For dessert, you can order chocolate chip cookies when you place your meal order. They bake the cookies while you eat dinner. We didn’t order dessert, so I don’t know how the cookies taste. I think they also offer a couple of other varieties of cookie besides chocolate chip.

Oh man, that’s some good eatin’!
I would totally order what Doug got. In fact, it’s almost enough for me to consider making the trip to the beach just for that (not that we don’t have good restaurants in Florence, but that tomtato mozarella chicken sandwich sounds really tasty right about now).
Dang, Jaime. Now I’m hungry!
