A happy anniversary

Wednesday marks exactly one year since my first day at WBTW. It's been a busy year, both here at the station and for me.

Over the past year, I have made friends with co-workers, viewers, and even a few people I have converted to News13 viewers. (If you can't count on your friends watching, then you are in trouble!) I have had the opportunity to explore the Eastern Carolinas, from the Grand Strand to the Pee Dee. I have been introduced to McBee and McLeod peaches. I have seen Lake Robinson in Hartsville. I was able to go to the Johnsonville Christmas Parade and to the Marion Fox Trot just to name a few. I have gotten to explore parts of Conway, Timmonsville, Darlington, and Bishopville. I love that when I put together forecasts, I can actually picture the towns I am forecasting for and can imagine what people there are doing each day. I have listened to beach music and spent a little time on the beach. I have been on the Waterway. And I have seen the coveted Cecil Bobblehead, although I don't own one for myself. (He really does make you send in a recipe!) Next stop is going to have to be South of the Border. I still haven't made it there, but it's on the list.

I have also learned a lot about forecasting. I have experienced the sea breeze for myself. It's not something out of a textbook, it's a factor I consider in my forecasting every day. I have learned to pay more attention to the tropics than I ever did living in Missouri or Indiana. And being my second June, I have learned that 100 degree heat indices before summer has officially started really isn't out of the ordinary. I am just glad that this year I am not carrying boxes and moving during it!

Here at the station, I have been a part of introducing a "new look" for News13. I was able to help with new weather graphics and have grown as a meteorologist and a forecaster. I produced internet-based weather lessons that teachers in Horry County can use for their fourth graders' science curriculum. I have also had a new challenge within the past couple months, learning how to put together news stories for my weekly Living Green reports. One of the best things about working here is something that viewers may not realize- the group of people I work with are incredibly encouraging and supportive. Putting together the news on a daily basis is a team effort and everyone has a role in the product that makes it to your home.

Basically, it's been a pretty good year. A busy year, but a good year. And thank you to everyone who have welcomed me into your home. The Eastern Carolinas. Which is now my home too!

Happy one year, Melissa. Glad you found a home here in the Sandlapper state. SOB sucks but I guess you need to experience it for yourself. Stay out of the Dirty Old Mens shop.

When you make it to SOB, make sure you take the $1 ride up the sombrero. You may laugh, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Then again, this is me we’re talking about…

Happy One Year (a little late). smile
