A few favorite Web sites

Our computers here at work are automatically set to scnow.com when we first fire up the Internet each day.

And while that's utilitarian, it doesn't always provide that moment of Zen I sometimes need to get through the day.

With that said, here are some other sites I like to check out when I have a moment:

http://www.thehungersite.com. A click on the "Click here to Give -- it's FREE!" button on this page helps to fight world hunger. It's easy, so why not? From this site, you can also navigate to The Breast Cancer Site, The Child Health Site, The Literacy Site, The Rainforest Site and (my favorite of the bunch) the Animal Rescue Site, where you can click to contribute to those causes, as well. I try to remember to click on each site every day.

http://www.bestfriends.org. I am a huge fan of Best Friends Animal Society and the work they do. It's my favorite charity by far. It operates the nation's largest no-kill animal shelter and serves as a model for all others. They even provide shelter to special needs animals (like cats with HIV or dogs rescued from dogfighting rings) that in most other shelters would have no chance of being adopted. As the mom of cats who had diabetes and leukemia before they crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and now two cats with dental problems and another who's been injured by gunfire, that's a big, big deal to me.

http://www.cuteoverload.com. Here's a site I try not to check until I'm close to leaving the office for the day. It's basically a compendium of uber-cute animal photos and videos. I don't visit this site much at home because I get plenty of live cuteness from my three sweet cats! But if I need a dose of canine cute, or even bovine cute, here's where I go.

icanhascheezburger.com. Similar to the aforementioned site because it's another good source of animal cuteness, but with poorly typed and often very funny captions. The editor in me must resist the urge to edit the captions, but the photos and humor usually succeed in distracting me.

http://www.perezhilton.com. It's a popular (and sometimes crude) celebrity gossip site, but it's where you'll most often find accurate breaking celebrity news. I admit, I'm not above checking it out.

gofugyourself.typepad.com. Another celebrity-related site, but it's dedicated to their bad fashion choices. Which, of course, makes me feel better about myself when I feel like a slob.

overheardintheoffice.com. A glorious site where employees share some of the (often inappropriate) things they hear during their workday. Some of the entries make me laugh out loud. It also makes me wonder if we shouldn't publish a weekly column called, "Overheard in the Pee Dee," just for fun.

There are loads of sites I have bookmarked here on my work computer -- municipal and county Web sites, law enforcement and state government Web sites, sites for area resources and charities and many journalism and news-related sites.

But, when I need a breather, these are some of the sites I check out. Hope they brighten your day a little, too.

I couldnt live with that..automatically set to scnow website…same as that “resource hog” they add to the bottom of your emails..

There are ways around that..but I am under contract not to give out instructions..wink

You got me with the bestfriends and the cuteoverload sites..

Thanks Jackie!

I love icanhascheezburger.com!  I check it almost everyday.  I’m going to have to check out cuteoverload.com though.

I tried to get my wife to go and work for Best Friends Animal Society.  I am not too sure how I would have adapted to Utah politics, but they are a great organization.  See you in a couple of weeks.  DC
