A blast from the past

I read a story on http://www.cnn.com today about a chain in Oregon that accidentally ordered LPs instead of CDs. Some of the stores sent the vinyl records back, but several of them put the records on their shelves. According to CNN, 20 of the LPs sold the first day. And some other businesses are thinking about carrying records in their stores.

I don’t think I’ve seen a record player in years. My parents had one when I was a kid — I vaguely remember seeing the cover for an Eagles’ album.

I think most of the albums I had were of children’s music. The only one I can clearly remember is an album of Christmas music, which was rendered by the melodious voices of Alvin and the Chipmunks. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t appreciate it today.

While my parents’ stereo was a combination cassette player/radio/record player, my grandparents had a unit that contained an eight-track player and a record player.

Now we have satellite radio and MP3 players. I can’t imagine going back to analog — I remember how the records sounded if the vinyl got scratched. Plus, as far as iPods go, there’s something to be said for being able to carry your music in such as small device. But CNN’s article said some hard-core music lovers prefer the sound you get from records.

What do y’all think?

I dont think I could re-train my ears to listen to LP’s ever again..

It was everything I could do to live thru my sister’s Donnie Osmond records..I consider myself lucky to be heterosexual...it could have went either way back then..wink

Luckily for me..Grand Funk Railroad came out on vinyl..just in the knick of time..

*** I know I agreed..when registering..not to post anything ugly..but I do have a reputation to uphold..***

I don’t think I want to exchange digital music for analog, either. Didn’t Grand Funk Railroad sing “We’re An American Band?”

Yes Ma’am they did..

..right along with “The Loco-Motion"…

It was during this era that I decided to grow my hair out..wear bell bottom britches..and took a serious interest in hippie women..

Hippie women were the only women in history that could start out looking like Cher and end up looking like Phyllis Diller...all within a matter of a few short years..

..musta been the drugs..wink

I still have all my old albums. Can’t bring myself to get rid of them. Cool thing about vinyl is the album covers. As far as the music. I don’t care to go back to analog. Digital is too crisp.
Anyone headed out to see Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank JR tonight?

I agree with Mr. Mookie. Of course, I’m thinking of CD albums. Bands would hide some of their best pictures on there. Weird Al always had something interesting on the inside of his CDs.

There’s something gratifying about finding an old CD you forgot, playing it and hearing some of the songs that, years ago, you skipped past, but now you enjoy it.

I used to love to listen to LPs, but yall are right. Digital stuff is so much better. I even have a portable satellite radio. (Sirius)
Sorry I have written lately. I could not get on this site. Somebody from FMN gave me a new password and it didn’t work. I am finally in, and I’m sure I won’t remember in the morning.
Glad to see Dwight Dana is blogging. He’s my favorite.

I enjoy Dwight’s blogs and Sirius radio, too. It’s great to be able to listen to music without all the annoying ads. And Dwight is a great storyteller.

Glad you’re back, Becky. I agree with Mookie about the album covers. I would look at my Queen album covers for hours, plus they usually included the lyrics, which was always a bonus. I don’t miss the quality of the sound of analog, or the space the speakers used to take up back in the day (a room can hold at least four more people now without big-honkin’ speakers). Oh, and it was always a buzz-kill when I would be playing air guitar and jumped off the big speakers… and the record would skip… Zzzzrzzckk!!

I love my iPod. I refer to it as my ultimate “mix tape”.
