8PM Hanna update

There will continue to be uncertainty in the forecast of Hanna until the storm starts it’s expected northwestward track. This should occur sometime tomorrow. Where Hanna ends up when that NW motion starts will go a long way to determining the track and where Hanna will end up.

This evening Hanna continues to struggle against the wind shear that dropped it from hurricane status earlier today down to a 65 mph tropical storm this evening. Thunderstorm activity is being blown away from the NW side of the storm, with the heaviest rain to the SE. The storm looks very ragged on the satellite loop. The storm has actually been drifting to the east this evening. This is one reason why the NHC track was pushed east at 5pm. The farther east the storm is when it starts it’s NW track, the farther east the track will be. The eastward movement is part of the meandering motion that has been going on for the past couple of days. If the storm starts moving back to the south it will run into Hispaniola, and that will weaken it further. Hurricane hunters are in the storm right now. The central pressure is rising, but the plane is still finding strong winds within the storm. It looks like it is still slowly weakening.

Tomorrow is a critical day for the future of Hanna. The wind shear will lessen, and the storm should start it’s NW motion…. It will also pick up some forward speed. Expect Hanna to strengthen tomorrow, perhaps becoming a hurricane once again. We will also have a better handle on where it is going.
