Last night, I was one of the lucky ones who witnessed the first Ben Folds Five show since the group disbanded, eight years ago. The show — and all the ’90s hits my friend was listening to as she drove us to the concert hall — made me nostalgic for a decade when the state of music wasn’t really that great, but it sure seemed to be at the time.
If you live in Florence and plan on voting in Tuesday’s primary elections, be prepared to cast two ballots.
Neil Young’s long-delayed “Archives” project should see the light of day later this year. It’s looking like a multimedia masterpiece, but any Neil Young fans with a heart of gold will probably have to sell said organ to afford it.
British band Radiohead will play—but not in person—on NBC’s “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” as the network observes a week of Earth Day.
I prefer to let my writing speak for itself — and I work hard to get the story right, so I stand by my work. My recent articles on the Florence County tax assessor situation are examples of this. Some recent letters to the editor, however, leave me with a few comments that I couldn’t fit into my articles.
The Florence Area Humane Society is gearing up to hold its second Bone-E-Fit on May 1, so I thought this would be a good time to remind everyone about some animal welfare issues in our county (and surrounding areas).
Everyone’s encountered a self-centered person who, even in a public arena, acts like they run the place. I understand that everyone has his or her inconsiderate moments — I’ve certainly had mine — but when an individual exhibits three or more instances of flippant behavior, I feel safe drawing conclusions about that person’s character traits.
Today’s story about the Cuban soccer players who abandoned their team in Tampa, Fla., has revived some thoughts that I’ve pondered for some time now.
I’m amazed, and frightened, by the number of crazy shootings we’re seeing in this country. In shopping malls, high schools and in such places as Amish country, which no one would have ever imagined. When you think about it, you wonder how you could be safe anywhere.
I’ll be honest — the only part of Super Bowl XLII I watched was the halftime show, and I thought Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers sounded great. I’m disheartened today to learn that some people, however, think they did a little TOO well.
While the 1970s are far from the Dark Ages, Florence County’s animal control needs have skyrocketed since then — even over the past five years. So it’s good to see the county council and the Florence Area Humane Society working to improve conditions for our four-legged friends.
Wow. The candidates must have been shackled to their podiums during the first half of the debate, because it’s a wonder at some points that they didn’t pounce on one another.
Debbie Miller of Florence, who supports John Edwards, said the former U.S. senator from North Carolina has had a consistent message about improving the economy long before it became one of the top issues in the presidential election.
Florence city councilman Billy D. Williams supports presidential candidate Barack Obama and said he hopes the nation sees the change the candidate is trying to bring to the country.
Barry and Carrington Wingard traveled to Myrtle Beach along with fellow Florence couple Dr. Larry and JoEtta Chewning. All of them support U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., for reasons including veterans’ and women’s issues and the economy.
