College football pick’em

Just when you thought the college football season couldn’t get any crazier, then last weekend happened.
No. 1 LSU loses to Kentucky in overtime and No. 2 Cal uses poor clock management in losing at home to Oregon State.
Being a diehard Ohio State fan, I wasn’t disappointed by those losses.

What Lincoln is Thinkin’ - Week 9

Wilson lost at Crestwood, but can they pull off the upset at home over Marlboro?  I’ll tell you what I think about Week 9.

COASTAL-CHOWAN SECOND HALF

The clock operator couldn’t wind the clock fast enough tonight. But mercifully the Chanticleers-51-0 rout over Chowan is over. It was a good confidence booster for the Chants, who will need it as they enter their final five games.

Survival in Chapel Hill

Saturday’s win by South Carolina was much closer than the Gamecocks wanted it to be. Somehow, the Gamecocks still won the game. And I’m not really sure how.

COASTAL-CHOWAN FIRST HALF

The Coastal-Chowan game had blowout written all over and so far it hasn’t disappointed. Coastal has dominated the undermanned and undersized Hawks in every area in leading 34-0 at the half.

USC needs to put the hammer down

So far, the Gamecocks have done exactly what they needed to do in order to beat North Carolina. The Gamecocks need to do the same in the second half.

Going to (North) Carolina

The campus at Chapel Hill is a great place to visit. Oh, and there’s football here, too.

Calabrese’s gamble changes momentum

A lot of people will point to Hartsville coach Jeff Calabrese’s third quarter gamble as the main reason Hartsville wound up on the short end of a 36-28 score to Conway.
But with a whole quarter left to play and the Red Foxes still nursing a 28-16 lead, that’s debatable at the least.
But one thing’s for sure: It did change the momentum in Conway’s favor.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PICK’EM

It’s hard to believe it’s Week 7 in the college football season but it is. It’s been one of the crazier ones in recent memory with Appalachian State getting things going against Michigan in the opening week.

Year of the first-round fantasy busts

It’s a rough year for first-round picks in fantasy football, and the MNFL, our league here at the Morning News, is no exception.
We have 14 teams, and I’d say 11 of our owners are cursing the day their top picks were drafted.

What Lincoln is Thinkin’ - Week 8

Just three weeks to go in the regular season, who’s in business for a region title?  And who will win the Throwdown at Kelleytown?  That’s in this week’s WLIT.

Knights face uphill battle in Region 6-4A

West Florence has a tough road ahead.
After starting the season 5-0, the Knights have now lost back-to-back games, including their Region 6-4A opener. West’s offensive output in those two games: 10 points - a field goal against Wilson and a late touchdown against Conway.
That’s bad news for the Knights. Their next two opponents, Sumter and Hartsville, lead the region in points scored.

Why would you schedule Sumter for your homecoming?

Will someone please tell me why someone with any respect for themselves or their players schedule the Sumter Gamecocks for his or her school’s homecoming? That would be like my mother inviting Rush Limbaugh to speak at Mount Zion AME Church on a Sunday morning.
Well, someone at South Florence High School was that crazy.

More good news for Gamecocks

South Carolina passed a big test Thursday night against No. 8 Kentucky, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

Lake City at Wilson notes

South Carolina State’s Marching 101 provided the music for Thursday night’s game be-tween Wilson and Lake City.
For the first half of Wilson’s 27-7 win, though, it seemed to me that both teams were paying more attention to S.C. State’s Champagne Girls than the game itself. In fairness to the teams, however, both defenses showed up.
