I froze my rear end off shooting this game, but several dedicated fans pulled out their blankets and warm weather gear to watch West Florence shut out South Florence 17-0. The game was called after five innings.

While covering a fire behind Avin’s Marine off of Pamplico Highway in Florence today, I got this shot of the sunlight streaming through the trees and smoke. To me it looks like a painting of fog lifting in the early morning hours.

The sun sets over a swampy area off of James Jones Avenue in Florence on Monday, March 2, 2009. A winter storm that crippled the east coast brought little more than cold temperatures to the Florence area.

Contrary to popular belief there was some snow in Florence on Monday, March 2, 2009. I was tasked with trying to find some weather photos. Myself and the majority of the Pee Dee expected to see some snow but it didnt’ happen. I drove around early trying to find some type of cold weather picture, since I thought there was no snow unitl I spotted a car covered in snow on North Irby Street in Florence. I promise this is a real picture, and I had to do a double-take to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Upon further investigation this car had a North Carolina license plate and I am assuming that it had just come from there, where there was actual snow. One of the things I love about my job is that I never know for sure what I’ll see. This was definitely the case. Enjoy!

Something extra from the Class A Lower State Championship game.

Wilson High School 11th-grader Katelyn Ruggiero yawns as her government teacher Yvonne Rhodes checks a fellow students questions as the group waits to appear on the C-SPAN program Washington Journal on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, as the C-SPAN Civics Bus paid visits to both Wilson and West Florence High Schools.

Apparently I am easily distracted by shiny things! This gold paperweight was sitting on Tom Kinard’s desk at the Pee Dee Electric Cooperative while I was taking his portrait, so I played around a bit. Not really a newspaper photograph, but I think it looks pretty cool.

Got this shot during the Darlington Falcons game against the Marlboro County Bulldogs. I rarely shoot the other end of the court because I would have to crop in way too much, but I love how this shot turned out! I have been nearly trampled several times by sitting where that photographer is sitting, but that’s where you get the best shots.

Got this shot at the Florence Christian Academy v Laurence Manning Academy basketball game on Tuesday night…would have published it but it didn’t go with the story.

While his uncle Kinsman Thomas signs with Eastern Michigan, Jaedon Bethea, 1, gets comfortable in an Eastern Michigan hat, much to the delight of his mother De’Andrea Thomas on signing day at Marlboro County High School in Bennettsville on Wednesday, February 4, 2009.

On Saturday I got to hang out with the Sidewalk Astronomer Tony Martinez from Science South. He was at the library with a A1- Alpha telescope gathering folks for a chance to view the sun. It was tough but I managed to get this photo of the sun, glowing red through the telescope.

This photo didn’t quite work out due to the small size and dark coloring of the dog, but I thought it was a funny moment. The dog is looking at a PETA activist painted like a tiger and sitting in a cage on the corner of West Evans and Irby Streets to protest the upcoming Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Francis Marion guard Shaquana Morgan (3) is fouled during the Coker Cobras game against the Francis Marion Patriots in Hartsville on Friday, December 12, 2008. No foul was called on the play.

On Tuesday, Veterans Day, I attended the Veterans Day event at St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Florence. While I was there I was able to meet and talk to several veterans from various conflicts. It was nice to sit for a moment and talk with them and hear their stories of service. Everyone I met is proud of their service and in my opinion deserves to be honored for it. It is just as important to not forget those currently serving our country and support them as well. This picture I took is of Air Force veteran Charles Wanner, who served from 1976 to 1983 in the Grenada conflict. This picture is similar to the one that was used in the newspaper and it was a toss up as to which one to use. So here is the other one in black and white. Thank you veterans and active duty military for your service. Morning News/John D. Russell
