Lives Touching Lives
The older I become, the more I come to realize how blessed I am, and grateful for the loving kindness I receive daily from those around me. The past couple of years have been kinda rough on me and my family. My mother’s passing away from us 19 months ago, and my father’s critical illness last Christmas brought me to my knees.

City/County Tug of War Unbearable
Horry County is known as the “Independent Republic”, and in many ways it’s a true depiction. It actually makes me pretty proud to have grown up in a community that takes care of itself, in spite of continually being taken advantage of by the State of South Carolina as a huge provider of revenue. Case in point, last week when the Department of Transportation representative Mike Barbee came to our community to help unveil the new road signs and road projects being paid for by our penny sales tax.

The Power of Teamwork
At the end of the day, it does me so much good to think about our team, and how selfless so many can be to make the overall news programs come together. I think of how, when help is needed most, individuals step in, then step up, and the gaps are filled. For the most part, those champions of teamwork don't look for accolades... it's just all in a days work. It is that kind of atmosphere that I love most.

“Oh-Ree”… Oh, No!
There has been some debate recently about the way to pronounce “Horry”. In fact, it’s kind of interesting when I bring it up in the newsroom. I get a lot of feedback! Now, I’m the only “on air” person in our newsroom who grew up in Horry County. In fact, that’s probably the way most local newsrooms look.

Breast Cancer Event Hits Home
Being involved in "Caring in our Lifetime" hits very close to home. My mother passed away only a year and a half ago, after fighting hard to beat cancer three times in her life. Her second cancer was breast cancer, and each time she fought the dreaded disease, it took its toll. She succumbed to throat cancer on April 17th, and I miss her so much I can hardly stand it.

I-73… Wrapping Up The Trip
The future work for I-73 /74 will be all about the money. Tyler Duvall was the last speaker before senators came together for an afternoon panel discussion, and Duvall's words could be like nuggets of gold. He looks pretty young, likely in his 30's, so it kind of threw me off kilter when I interviewed him because he clearly has indepth experience and wisdom when it comes to financing roads.

Off-to DC… I-73 or Bust
On Tuesday, September 25th, Eastern South Carolina leaders will board a chartered jet for Washington, DC, all with one focus, moving forward plans for constructing Interstate-73. They’ll meet up with other leaders from the states along the I-73 corridor- North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Michigan, for two days of handshaking and note-taking. It’s their mission to position I-73 for priority funding in the next Transportation Reauthorization Bill, coming up in 2009.
