I never gave up on baseball like many did – if only temporarily – after the strike in 1994. But since then, I have certainly felt somewhat disconnected. Spring training, though, has helped me regain a stronger appreciation and love for the game.
Hollywood and Broadway star Billy Crystal got to do something Thursday that the rest of us only dream about. I’m sure I wouldn’t look as good as he did striking out against the Pirates’ Paul Maholm in a spring training game. But just to have that opportunity is beyond a regular baseball fan’s wildest dreams.
There’s no question baseball has some shoring up to do with its drug testing processes. Commissioner Bud Selig said recently he doesn’t believe an outside, independent source is necessary to conduct the testing. But considering the sport’s recent track record, that’s a little disturbing.
This is one of the best times of the year. So many people are looking forward to Thursday and all the happiness and joy it brings. I know I am.
We love to hype up sports events in our society. But there’s nothing more over-hyped than today, college football national signing day.
It has become the norm week in and week out through the NFL playoffs for media and fans to talk about how the Giant’s opponents kept losing games instead of how the Giants were winning them. Anyone who says that about Sunday’s Super Bowl must not have watched the game.
A 92-year-old blind golfer made a hole-in-one recently. I’m hoping I can do it before I get that age or lose my sight.
Some South Florence supporters are no doubt upset that Brian Lane has decided to leave after only one year as the school’s football coach. But really, he left for all the right reasons.
Getting healthy isn’t always fun and doing it the right way is an exercise in patience. But it’s already paying dividends for me.
Saturday night’s clash between USC and Clemson didn’t mean anything nationally. But to the fans in the Palmetto State, it meant everything. And it lived up to what a rivalry game should be.
I can usually get a good feel about a game and what might transpire, but tonight’s game between Clemson and South Carolina has me a little bit stumped.
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is every bit as good as advertised. And South Carolina’s defense simply does not have an answer for that caliber of player right now.
South Carolina’s defense took a physical beating from Arkansas running back Darren McFadden on Saturday night. One important question for that once-proud unit now is whether it can bounce back mentally and psychologically and give the Gamecocks a chance against Florida and Clemson.
Vanderbilt is not only capable of upsetting South Carolina, the Commodores seemed set on doing so in the first half, jumping out to a 17-0 lead. USC can still win this game, but it will take some work.
It’s a great day for football here in Columbia. Early day, but great day.
I always consider these 12:30 kickoffs to be both a blessing and a curse, and a lot of fans do as well. You get home early enough after the game to do something or watch more football on TV if you like, but it definitely takes some effort to arrive in time for a 12:30 kick.
