The meaningless stories return…

I’ve been gone for a while...well not really gone in the physical sense, but gone from the blogging community.

As seen on t.v….sort of

This whole blogging trend really caught on with the television community in the past year or two. I often visit other television stations’ websites to see what their anchors and reporters are blogging about...and the selection is quite varied. I have noticed a few common themes though. A lot of the female anchors use the blogs as a way to let viewers know that they are, in fact, only human. Their blogs often concentrate on their weight and appearance, and the public’s obsession with them being “perfect.” Some even go out on a limb to talk about their weight loss efforts.
What do they get in return? Well, a lot of nice, encouraging comments...but a couple of very rude comments that don’t further the discussion at all.

The “Mom-isms”

I bet when you were younger your mom would always throw phrases out at you, that were supposed to describe your personality
If you’re anything like me, you probably rolled your eyes a little bit and thought, “yeah, right.”
Well, the older I get, the more I realize that everything she said....is pretty much true.

A different kind of writer’s block

Is it considered writer’s block when you can’t think of anything interesting to blog about?

My Top Ten

Well, the Oscars are this weekend, and if you’ve read any of my previous blogs you know that I’m a Hollywood/movie buff.
Once again I won’t be watching the telecast live (I’ll be at work)...but I will be interested in the overall results of the show.
At this time of the year when the Academy picks their top movies, actors and actresses, it made me think, what are my top picks for what I believe are the best movies of all time?

Signs of Spring?

I noticed today for the first time that some of the trees around the area are already blooming.
The blooms are a beautiful pinkish-white color and I believe they’re called Tulip trees...but if anyone knows anything different, please let me know.
Anyway, they’re absolutely gorgeous and though I don’t know if they’re actually supposed to be blooming yet or not, I’m happy to see them.
They are a little sign that spring and summer are not too far off...and the 50 and 60 degree temperatures will soon be a thing of the past.
I know a lot of people enjoy the “winter” months down here, but after being spoiled by many Carolina summers, I’m no longer a fan of any cold weather.

Ah, the joys of home ownership

Being a first time homeowner, a lot of things kind of creep up on you…
There’s of course the maintenance, the taxes, the insurance, etc… but what about the unexpected?
Well, the other day I experienced the unexpected...big time.

Deadly Cocktail

Medical officials have now released the completed autopsy results for Heath Ledger.
They are calling his death an “accidental overdose.”
They say he had the following prescription drugs in his system at the time of his death: Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Diazepam, Temazepam, Alprazolam, and Doxylamine.

Useless information

I love absolutely useless information...stuff you don’t really need to know, but do…
I guess I like throwing random comments out from time to time, it makes the conversation easier when you have nothing else to talk about.
So for all of you people like me, here’s a bunch of useless information I’ve found on the internet...maybe one day you can use them as conversations starters (or enders, depending on who your friends are.)

Exhaustion

I’m exhausted. I don’t know any other way to put it. I haven’t been eating right, I’ve gotten about 4 hours of sleep each night for the past week, and I can’t go to bed without dreaming about the news.  I covered the two presidential primaries in Columbia over the past couple of weeks, and have been working on a homicide by child abuse trial all this week. What that means...is major “work mode.” I love my job, perhaps a little too much, and pour a lot of myself into it. I live and breathe the news (which I have to imagine is quite unfortunate for the poor people who have to hang out with me.)

Tinseltown Tragedy

I, like probably everyone else around the world, was shocked and very saddened by the news of Heath Ledger’s death. I think he was one of the most talented young actors out there right now. Whenever someone this young (and famous) dies, there is always a massive amount of media coverage and in many ways, it reminds me of my own mortality. You want to believe that something like this isn’t true. When someone’s immortalized in film, you can still see them anytime you pop in a dvd. What makes the situation even sadder, is that his two year old daughter Matilda, with now grow up never really having gotten a chance to know her dad.

Convergence- the broadcasting side of the story

I’ve really enjoyed reading Jackie and Jamie’s blogs about convergence. It’s interesting to know what people on the newspaper side have to say about the issue. I felt the need to chime in on the broadcasting side. I remember when the word sent shivers down my spine. At one time I think I can honestly say that I hated the idea of convergence. When asked about the issue I would tell people “Look, I went to school to be a television journalist, I have no interest in writing for a newspaper.” Boy how the times have changed....

The Britney Saga

Do you have an interest in something that completely doesn’t fit with your personality? Well, I do. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I’m very serious about my work, can spout off word definitions and political trivia, etc. But what all of them may not know is that behind the “I love the news facade”, there is an entertainment news junkie. I’m talking about the worst of the worst- the tabloid rags, the Hollywood gossip websites, you name it. No matter how much I may try to hide it, I am hooked on entertainment news. I check people.com and eonline about as religiously as I check the wires and television news websites....it’s pretty bad, I know.

Omaha tragedy reignites debate over protection vs. privacy

I sat and watched the evening national news tonight, and the differing viewpoints on the tragedy that took place in Omaha.
A 19-year-old gunman walked into a mall there, took an elevator to the third floor of a department store, and opened fire.
He shot and killed eight people, injured four others, and then turned the gun on himself.
This incident has once again made people question the levels of security in America.
There are those who think that privacy is becoming a scarce commodity and that increased security measures are not only unnecessary, but are an invasion by “big brother.”
Others think though that if we don’t secure the most vulnerable places, we could see more of these types of crimes.

Hostage case ends in tragedy for everyone involved

It was pretty much heartwrenching to watch the events that took place in a courtroom in Marion this morning.
No one won, no one gained anything, everyone lost.
